I have really enjoyed this year teaching and learning with my students. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your child and to enhance their learning! It was a fabulous year and I am so proud of every student! They all made so many gains this year!
Enjoy the summer and please stay in contact! I love to hear updates from families and to stay connected throughout the years! Please pill out the End of the Year Survey, found at the top of the page on it's own tab. I appreciate any and all feedback! See you in the fall!

Students are finishing up on our "All About" books! Students worked very hard to research an animal of their choice and have used programs, such as Brainpop, Jr, Britannica Online, World Book for Kids, Kid Rex and more. They are in the process of recording their writing, using a program called 30 Hands. The following rubric was used in grading for this writing cycle: Wow! May is here already! Now all we have to do is wait for the weather to act like it is May!!!
We will be finishing up our Language Arts unit on Author Studies. Ask your child about an "Author's Fingerprints"! We have focused on Robert Muncsh, Ted Arnold and Mo Willems. Students have been using the techniques of authors in their own writings as well! In Math, we continue to work on adding and subtracting two digit numbers, including regrouping. We will complete this unit next week. Students are taking home Math book Part 1! But we will continue to review and end the year in book 2 with measurement and time. We will be completing our studies in Science on investigations providing evidence that Vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate, and the effects of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light. We will end the year focusing on engineering design and STEM activities. In Social Studies, our focus will be Economics, learning why businesses and industries need specially trained workers, and understanding the difference between a private business and public goods and services. Spring Music Concert will be held at 9:00 a.m. on May 19th at the Rhinelander High School Auditorium. The Snack Calendars for May and June have been posted on the Snack Schedules tab. We have several missing pedometers. Some students have been forgetting to take them off at the end of the day. Please check at home to see if your child has one! Thank you! On May 26th, we will be having a Maker Faire at 12:45-2:30. Separate information from the office will be sent home. Great News!!! Our class came in 3rd in the Sumdog competition and Mr. Bontz's class came in 1st! This competition included schools in the Northwoods area! So proud of our kids!
We are continuing to learn about sound and light vibrations/waves, as well as experimenting with them. Thank you for donating the needed items. We are still in need of several different sized boxes (no bigger than a shoe box), so if you have any....please send asap! Thanks! Book orders are due on Monday April 17th. You may order online. Our class code is HKYVP. We finished our Opinion writing unit and added some work to the Seesaw site. Check out what your child thinks about the different seating options in the classroom!
In Math, we are working on using place value to add, subtract and compare numbers. Students are expected to count to 120 by ones, 2's, 5's and 10's. We have been entered into an online Math contest, which is school-wide. We started today and students may participate at home. The site is www.sumdog.com. Student login information is taped to the inside of their assignment notebooks. Our class planted many seeds, including the potatoes, which most of you saw during our Project Days. The potatoes are becoming very large! We added marigolds, tomatoes, beans, peas, several herbs and more. We will be transplanting many of them into our school garden! If you are interested in helping take care of our garden this summer, please contact me! We have begun to conduct experiments showing evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. We are in need of the following (for our experiments): *different sized boxes, such as jewelry boxes and shoe boxes. (No large boxes please). *Toilet paper or paper towel rolls (empty) *solo cups Reminder: There is no school on Monday or on April 14th. Note: Our Spring Concert is scheduled for May 19th at the High School, at 9:00 a.m. We will continue recording our work in class to share with you! Today, we counted to 120. Our goal is to count to 120 within one minute. Wow! Is that difficult!
Here is a great video that explains how to use Seesaw! youtu.be/pzlrtDR84KY We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Tuesday, February 14th. Please have your child make Valentine's for each classmate. Here is the list of students in our class:
Adia Bella Holly Jackson Joshua Arlo Kaitlyn Kendall Owen Reagan Ashlyn Roan Taylor William You are welcome to send snacks! We will be doing a special craft activity, with the help of Mrs. Childs! Thank you for meeting during conference times! The students have been busy preparing for the Christmas Concert and designing and creating gifts, They have also been busy learning about reading and understanding the central message of a story. THis is the lesson that the author wants the reader to learn. Some examples of books that have lessons are Jack and the Beanstalk, The Ugly Duckling and The Emorer's New Clothes. See if your child can share the central message in a story from home!
The class has been doing exceptionally well in identifying, contrasting and comparing 2 and 3 dimensional shapes and learning about equal shares (1/2, 1/3, 1/4). We will be finishing up this unit in Math this week! A hot topic in our classroom right now is maps vs. globes. We are discovering many things, including directions, a compass rose, symbols and more! We will have our Christmas Party on December 21st, which will also include our PBIS celebration (bring your personal electronic device). If you are interested in sending a treat, please respond to this survey! docs.google.com/forms/d/1vgz9E1pFxzxjCcmbrFXDmKGsowNxZ3nXrECHDYeSyMI/edit Our school is collecting donations for several charities, rather than participating in a gift exchange. The first grade is collecting for the Humane Society. A note was sent home last week with items that are needed. Please send in soon! Thank you! Thursday is Kids Shopping Day!!! Please send $10, if you wish, so your child can purchase Christmas gifts for his/her family! Gifts will be wrapped before they go! (Hope your Christmas tree is up and ready!) Book Orders are due on Friday! Don't forget to use the coupon for the free book! Please remember to check the snack schedule for December and also check out our photos!!! Need inspirational ideas for Christmas to keep your little ones mind open for creation? Check out the stem gifts list below!
Project Day was a HUGE success! I will be posting pictures soon, on our Photos tab! Our visitors voted for fiction or nonfiction books. The students had so much fun presenting, but they had even more fun tallying and discovering the results! It was a close vote, but the winning vote went to nonfiction! We are still enjoying non-fiction books and can identify nonfiction text features, such as bold words, side bars, headings, table of contents, etc. Ask your child to do a book scavenger hunt to show you features they find! We are starting a new unit in math focused on Geometry. More information and ideas for home are listed below! Friday, Nov. 18th, we will have popcorn day. It is 50 cents per bag. Students are only allowed one bag, but may purchase for others who do not have money. We will have Popcorn Fridays each week. We also earned a class reward, which we will be celebrating on Friday. Students can bring a beach towel and dress in "beachy" clothes (Hawaiian shirts, beach hats, sunglasses, but no bathing suits please!). We will be having an extra reading time while "basking" in the beach day! Enjoy the weekend, good luck hunting, crafting, shopping or enjoying family time! And keep warm!!! |
